Mrs. Rita Welch
Founder

Mrs. Welch is a businessperson who helped shape the senior care industry in Massachusetts. She is credited with being both a pioneer and an innovator in Long Term Care. In 1949 the Welch family opened and shared their home with elders needing around-the-clock supervised care. This event marked the founding of the John Scott House by Mrs. Welch and her late husband Frank.

Six decades later the business that began as a modest 11-bed nursing home has grown into a company, Welch Healthcare & Retirement Group, that employs over 2,000 full and part-time staff members and offers a continuum of care from independent and assisted living to rehabilitation and skilled nursing and home care. On the 60th Anniversary of Welch Healthcare & Retirement Group, Mrs. Welch released her memoir, "Hand in Hand; My Family and My Business".

Mrs. Welch has served in leadership positions on boards of national and state organizations.

She is:

  • Principal in ownership entities of the Welch Healthcare properties
  • A founding member and former president of the Massachusetts chapter of the American College of Nursing Home Administrators
  • A founding member and former president of the Massachusetts Senior Care Association
  • Former secretary of the American Health Care Association
  • First chairperson of the Massachusetts Board of Registration of Nursing Home Administrators and holds License # 1 in Massachusetts.
