1. What is Adult Day Health?
It is a program for older adults living in the community. Medical supervision, social services, nutritional monitoring and recreational events are offered within a safe, structured, homey environment during the daytime hours. The Day Health center provides respite to caregivers.
 

2. How do I pay for the Program?
Payment is either by private, Medical Assistance, Elder Services, or approved insurance plan sources. Currently, Medicare does not cover Adult Day Health. More information about financial assistance can be obtained by contacting the center.

3. How do I get to the center?
There are several transportation options such as chair car service, taxi, the MBTA, The Ride Program, or van service from the local Council on Aging. Information about eligibility for financial assistance can be obtained by contacting the Center.
Many families choose to transport one or both ways.

4. What does the admission process involve?
A completed application, personal interview, and current physical exam.

5. What do people do in Adult Day Health?
A full program is provided for members from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. There are a wide variety of activities offered. A typical day starts off with a continental breakfast, exercise, health monitoring, activities, lunch and more activities. Rest periods are taken as desired.

6. Does staff provide assistance with activities of daily living?
Independence is encouraged, although if assistance is needed it is provided. The use of adaptive equipment is stressed to enable independence.

7. How many days a week can I attend?
A minimum of two days a week. Experience suggests that members do better with three, four, or five days a week.

8. Who staffs the Adult Day Health Center?
The program director, a licensed social worker, oversees the daily operation of the center. The director is responsible for the admission process and social service functions. A Registered Nurse monitors the member's care. The activities coordinator provides the members with a well rounded activity program. And a program assistant assists with members daily needs.

9. What other services are available?
Laboratory, podiatry, vision and hearing, family support/counseling, educational programs, hairdresser or barber services are available. Home Health/Home care, Physical/Occupational/Speech therapies can be arranged if indicated or requested.

10. Are all Adult Day Health Centers certified by a state agency?
Although, certification is not required Welch Adult Day Health Centers are certified by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and meet all state criteria.

11. Who will meet my healthcare needs?
A registered nurse is available to administer medication if needed as well as monitor blood pressures, weights, blood sugars, and provide treatment as directed by your physician.

12. What if I require a special diet?
Adult Day Health can accommodate special diets as ordered by your physician. Day health members are provided a hot noon time meal as well as morning and afternoon snacks. All food is prepared to meet the American Dietetic Association guidelines.

13. What is an Intergenerational program?
Children from Welch's onsite Child Day Care Centers and/or Community Child Day Care Centers visit on a regular basis. The special monthly events, holiday celebrations and creative activities are highly successful with both age groups.

14. What are the benefits of attending Adult Day Health?
Adult Day Health will be a new experience for you. Like any new experience there may be some apprehension, this is normal. You will quickly find out that the program will open new horizons for you. You will have a renewed zest for life. New friends New interests - Good food - Medical Supervision - Socialization.
